Prevent Scoliosis with Chiropractic Care

By the age of 16, it is estimated that 2-3% of Americans have developed scoliosis. Women make up a larger percentage of those with scoliosis than men. Most people with scoliosis do not even know they have it. And of this population, a majority do not realize that there is help for them with chiropractic.

The medical model for treating scoliosis involves therapy, back braces, and, unfortunately, surgery using metal rods being inserted into the spine to force it into a desired position, resulting in a life-long fusion of the spine.

Like with any major surgery, they last several hours, involve high risk side-effects, and don’t guarantee results. Patients suffering from scoliosis are increasingly seeking other methods of treatment that are safer and come with a higher level of results and quality of life.

Jaffe Chiropractic uses the drug-free chiropractic approach to helping patients with scoliosis. This approach is fast, effective, and, most of all, safe.

What is Scoliosis?

The term scoliosis refers to a lateral, or sideways, bending of the spine. While it is not a traditional disease, it has similar characteristics in that it can progress, and, if untreated, can result in severe or even life-threatening situations.

While standing behind someone, their spine should be straight. It is when there is the sideways bending do we have scoliosis. When scoliosis occurs, the spine can curve in one of three ways:

  1. A single curve to the left (shaped like the letter C), is called levoscoliosis.
  2. The spine curves to the side as a single curve to the right (shaped like a backward letter C), called dextroscoliosis.
  3. The spine has two curves, sometimes referred to as a double major curve, like the letter S.

Most Common Form of Scoliosis

The most common type of scoliosis in children is called idiopathic scoliosis. It is named idiopathic scoliosis because the origin is not known or totally understood. This type of scoliosis can start off without symptoms, pain, or observed changes from the outside. However, once it is found on x-ray or exam, it should be monitored for progression.

Children and young adults, especially pre-teen females, with idiopathic scoliosis should be watched even more closely due to their not fully mature skeletal development. While their spines and other bones are still growing, they are more susceptible to rapid changes in curves, especially scoliosis. It is possible that, in rare occasions, these curves can

progress and severely restrict cardiac and lung function.

Signs of Scoliosis

Scoliosis can come with many different signs and symptoms. Often, a somewhat rudimentary test called Adam’s Forward Bend Test can be used to scan for spinal scoliosis. The following may be seen with this test and may indicate the need for further investigation:

  • Shoulder height difference from one side to the other
  • Rib cage unevenness
  • Waist unleveling
  • Body leans or bends to one side
  • One leg may appear shorter when compared to the other

Symptoms

Though pain may not be common in children, there are many symptoms that people may experience:

  • Pain ranging from mild to severe
  • Posture abnormalities
  • Stiffness or a general lack of mobility especially in the mid back or ribs
  • General discomfort and a variety of other symptoms

How Chiropractic treatment can help

By utilizing chiropractic’s ability to remove interference to proper function, the doctor will analyze the spine and use adjustments and other therapies and exercises to allow correction and reduction of most curves. Scoliosis treatment

can help kids, teens, adults, and seniors live a better life, with less pain and stress.
